Training Staff to Serve Patrons on Assistive Technology

The most important aspect of staff training is to encourage an approachable, friendly manner in your staff.  People with disabilities will respond well when they sense that the library's staff is trying hard to serve their needs.

  • Basic training should be provided to all staff on how to interact with people with disabilities.  To help with this, the ALA's Association of Specialized and Cooperative Agencies (ASCLA) has developed a toolkit of 15 tipsheets to help library staff work positively with patrons with disabilities.  Topics include such titles as: Vision Issues, Volunteers with Disabilities, Mental Illness, Service Animals, and Hard of Hearing. http://www.ala.org/ascla/sites/ala.org.ascla/files/content/asclaprotools/accessibilitytipsheets/
  • All staff should be trained to the location, basic function, and who to go to on the staff that can provide further assistance to patrons who require assistance.
